The Forty Hours Devotion

The forty hours devotion is a traditional Catholic practice of continuous Eucharistic adoration lasting for approximately forty hours, recalling the time Jesus’ body lay in the tomb before His Resurrection.

During this period, the Blessed Sacrament is solemnly exposed in a monstrance, inviting the faithful spend time in prayer, silence, and worship before the Real Presence of Christ. The devotion typically begins and ends with a special Mass, including processions, hymns, and Benediction.

Meaning and Origins

The number forty carries deep spiritual meaning throughout the Scripture — forty days of the Flood, forty years in the desert, and Jesus’ forty days of fasting and temptation — all symbolizing preparation, purification and renewal.

The devotion began in the 16th century Italy, with early promotion by saints such as St. Philip Neri and St. Ignatius of Loyola. It spread quickly through Europe and was later brought to the United States, where St. John Neumann, Bishop of Philadelphia, established it in American parishes as powerful means of spiritual revival.

The Forty Hours Devotion provides the faithful an opportunity to:
